Small Wonder
Nikon's newest digital SLR, the D40, is our smallest
and lightest ever.
Okay, now that I've got your attention (what pro shooter
doesn't like to hear "small" and "light" used
in a camera description?), I have to tell you that the D40 isn't
intended to be a pro camera, but there are a couple of things
about its capabilities that might make you want to slip it into
your bag on the next shoot, or be sure to have one to take along
on fun trips when you’re trying to pack light, yet still
have a powerful digital SLR at your disposal.
First: 6.1 megapixels, which is plenty enough for lots of jobs.
I’ve already made 24 x 36-inch prints from the D40, and
they look terrific. Now, I'm not going to be shooting
the finish of the Kentucky Derby with this camera,
and neither are you; that’s what my D2Xs and D200 are
for, but that still leaves a lot of work that can be done with
this new camera. In fact, 6.1 megapixels is the same count you'll
find in a D70, and I know for a fact that David Alan Harvey
shot a National
Geographic story with that camera. I even relied on the
6.1 megapixel D50 while traveling through Italy and
Croatia last summer, only to have Nikon print one of
my favorite sunflower images to a huge 30 x 40 inch print.
Next: Full compatibility with all AF-S Nikkor lenses.
The D40 is sold with a lens—the new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G
ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor—but any AF-S glass will be right
at home with it. So will SB-800 and SB-600 Speedlights and the
SU-800 command unit, which will give you all the benefits and
functions of Nikon wireless remote photography when used with
the D40. Two more flash notes: the camera has a built-in Speedlight,
and we've introduced a new one—the ultra-compact SB-400—which
is a perfect match to the D40's size and weight profile.
And: The D40 has a similar big, bright 2 ½-inch LCD
that's also found on the D2Xs, D200 and D80, and it
also adopts the same In-Camera editing capabilities
as the D80 which include In-Camera Red-Eye Fix™,
D-Lighting, color balance and so much more.
Finally: If you're looking to present Nikon quality
and capability to someone in your family who shoots for fun
rather than profit, D40 is tailor made for that role.
